When Kolkata works best
- December to February: the clearest, most comfortable window — cool evenings, no monsoon, post-Puja calm
- November: post-Puja recovery — city is quieter but hotel availability begins to free up
- October: peak Durga Puja — extraordinary atmosphere but every hotel and vendor is at maximum capacity; avoid unless you specifically want Puja immersion and booked 12+ months ahead
- March: heating up but still manageable for outdoor events
- April–June: intense heat and humidity — outdoor functions in the evening only
- June–September: monsoon — outdoor venues need complete covered backup
Durga Puja: the world's largest street art festival
Kolkata's Durga Puja in October is unlike any event in India. The entire city transforms — public pandals of museum-grade art installation, street illuminations for kilometres, and a cultural energy that no other Indian city generates in the same way. Planning a wedding around Puja rather than avoiding it can be extraordinary — but it requires 12 months of advance booking and the acceptance that vendor rates, hotel prices and traffic will all reflect peak demand.
Marwari and Bengali wedding traditions
Marwari weddings in Kolkata typically run four to five days with multiple distinct puja functions, baraat and large joint-family gatherings. Bengali weddings carry the Aiburo Bhaat, Gaye Holud, Shubho Drishti, Saat Paak and Sindoor Daan across distinct programme days. Both require planners who understand the ceremony structure before writing any other brief — the catering and décor are derived from the functions, not independent of them.
International arrivals: CCU
- CCU operates direct flights to Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur
- Dhaka is among the highest-frequency routes — relevant for families with Bangladeshi connections
- CCU is approximately 35–45 minutes from the Chowringhee hotel belt in normal traffic
- Plan arrivals by flight cluster; don't compress all international arrivals into a single welcome window
Marriage registration
Marriages in Kolkata are registered under the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act with the relevant registrar. NRI and foreign-national couples require additional attestation. Confirm with a legal advisor — we coordinate around the legal calendar but do not provide legal advice.
